Mrs. Jimmie Leola Word was born in Palestine, Texas to James Abe and
Ella Burgess Lacy. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in class of 1927. Her entire religious life was spent at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church where she showed promise even as a child, of leadership ability. She loved people and worked as chairman of Program Committee, Director of Arts in Vacation Bible School and headed the Black History Month program each year. In the community, she served as director of senior citizen's programs. The Sharing and Caring Club enjoyed many interesting hours of games, art and parties under her leadership. Mrs. Word was also overseer and supervisor of park activities for a season. The contributions she made did not go unnoticed. She received several public honors and notable recognitions during these active years. Mrs. Word was a member of Eastern Star Naomi Chapter, Number 50. She was married to Mr. Ernest Word May 16, 1929, one daughter was born to this union. Mr. Word preceded her in death. She passed this life Wednesday, July 2, 1007 after a lengthy illness. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Trower, Carson California, two granddaughters, Ms. Chandra Trower, Long Beach, Ca. and Bridget (Chinedum) Uchemefuna, Cerritos, CA., four great grandchildren, one sister; Mrs. Corinne Sheffield, Palestine, TX., a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. |
