Ernest Word

Born:  18 August 1906 - Palestine, Anderson, Texas
Died:  9 November 1979
Father:  Columbus Word
Mother:  Elizabeth Lee
Spouse/Informant:  Jimmie Lacy - 16 May 1929

Mr. Ernest Word was born August 18, 1906 in Palestine, Texas.  He was the oldest of the twelve children born to bless the union Columbus and Elizabeth Word.
He attended Banks Elementary School and Lincoln High School.
While still a lad, he united with the South Union Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. S.E. Diggs.  here he grew and reached great spiritual stature, involving himself in the auxiliary life of the church and serving wherever needed.  In time, he became a member of the Usher Board, the Senior Choir, Prayer Band leader and an ordained deacon.  In later years he joined his family in membership to the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. S.H. Graham.  At Pilgrim he lost none of his zeal for the work, serving these same offices.  He was a member of the Senior Choir, one time president of Senior Ushers and a member of the Deacon Board.
He was married to Miss Jimmie Lacy, May 16, 1929.  One daughter was born to this union.
Mr. Word worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 20 years, as a machinist helper before retiring on disability.
He became ill October 5 and passed this life, November 9, at 11:00 p.m.  Two children preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing:  his widow, Mrs. Jimmie Word; one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Trower, Carson, California; three brothers, C.P., Jessie and Peter Word all of Palestine; five sisters, Mrs. Ida Montgomery and Mrs. Ora O'Brien, Palestine and Mrs. Elizabeth Littles Davis, Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. Mildred Reed and Mrs. Margaret Robinson, both of Washington, D.C.; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends.
