Mr. Ernest Word was born August 18, 1906 in Palestine, Texas.
He was the oldest of the twelve children born to bless the union
Columbus and Elizabeth Word. He attended Banks Elementary School
and Lincoln High School. While still a lad, he united with the
South Union Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. S.E. Diggs.
here he grew and reached great spiritual stature, involving himself
in the auxiliary life of the church and serving wherever needed.
In time, he became a member of the Usher Board, the Senior Choir,
Prayer Band leader and an ordained deacon. In later years he
joined his family in membership to the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church
under the pastorate of Rev. S.H. Graham. At Pilgrim he lost
none of his zeal for the work, serving these same offices. He
was a member of the Senior Choir, one time president of Senior
Ushers and a member of the Deacon Board. He was married to Miss
Jimmie Lacy, May 16, 1929. One daughter was born to this
union. Mr. Word worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 20
years, as a machinist helper before retiring on disability. He
became ill October 5 and passed this life, November 9, at 11:00 p.m.
Two children preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his
passing: his widow, Mrs. Jimmie Word; one daughter, Mrs.
Geraldine Trower, Carson, California; three brothers, C.P., Jessie
and Peter Word all of Palestine; five sisters, Mrs. Ida Montgomery
and Mrs. Ora O'Brien, Palestine and Mrs. Elizabeth Littles Davis,
Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. Mildred Reed and Mrs. Margaret Robinson,
both of Washington, D.C.; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and
friends. |
