Dorothy Elizabeth Moore Richardson, the
daughter of Mr. Cecil Haynes and Mrs. Nettie Ervin Haynes, was born
in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. As an infant, she was baptized in Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she remained a faithful, dedicated member throughout her life. She served her church in many capacities, including Superintendent of the Sunday School, Sunday school teacher, secretary of the Stewardess Board and the Board of Christian Education, and director of the Vacation Bible School. She was graduated from the Lincoln High School, Palestine, Texas, on May 27, 1927. her B.A. degree was earned at Wiley College. Later, she did further study at Texas College, Prairie View, and Texas Southern University. She was married to Fred Daniels, to which union one daughter, Hazel Larue was born. Later she married to Albert Richardson. Her teaching career began at New Chapel School, Anderson County and included terms of service at Massey Lake and Bethel Schools and Sam Houston Elementary School, Palestine, from which she retired in 1975. Not only was her strong influence for good felt in the religious sector and in the classroom, but she also enhanced the civic and fraternal life of the community, state and nation. At Wiley College, she was initiated into Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. In 1976, at the national Boule in Houston, Texas, she was honored with a gold medallion for fifty-five years of membership. Locally, she had served as treasurer of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorors for twenty years. Mrs. Richardson was the last surviving charter member of the Just We Club, organized in 1932. She served as an American Red Cross volunteer and made numerous trips to Rusk State Hospital to help with entertaining the patients. As a volunteer, she taught arts and craft classes to the Golden Age Club members at Lincoln Community Center. As a dedicated volunteer solicitor for the American Cancer Society, she was recently awarded a certificate of appreciation. Fraternally, she was affiliated with Hearts of Love Court No. 16 of the Grand Court Order of Calanthe and had served for several years as Worthy Counselor. At the time of her demise, she was Worthy Inspector. In the Order of the Eastern Star, she was an officer of the Supreme O.E.S. Department; Supreme Past Elector in O.E.S.'s Supreme Honored Recorded of Amaranth; Deputy Supreme Matron for Texas Amaranth; Worthy Grand Matron, Queen of Sheba O.E.S. for Texas and member of the Scholarship Committee. In 1979, the Palestine Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc. presented her with an annual Citizenship award. "Dottie", as she was affectionately called, is survived by her husband, albert D. Richardson; one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Johnson, Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Mark Wallace, Dallas, Dorothy Wallace, Houston, and Rodney Johnson, Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Gertie Lenhart, Longview, Texas, and Mrs. Minnie L. Johnson, Palestine; one brother, Cecil Haynes, Palestine; one aunt, Mrs. Mattie Ross, Henderson; and many relatives and friends. |
