On January 27, 1939, God smiled, and to the
parentage of LC, and Lillie Belle Austin a baby girl, Aubrey Jean,
was born. In the loving arms of her family she grew into the
springtime of life. During this season her religious education
began at Cottrell Chapel C.M.E. Church. As an infant she was
baptized. However when the church disbanded, she joined her
parents and husband at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She
actively participated and faithfully attended for over forty years.
Her last date of attendance before her death was August 16, 2009.
She left us for a better place on September 10, 2009 at Trinity
Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas She was a product of
Palestine ISD attending Washington Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High and
graduating with honors from A.M. Story High School in 1956. Upon
graduating from high school, Aubrey attended Prairie View A&M
University receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Education with a minor in Elementary Education on August 24, 1960.
She later earned her Master of Education Degree in Elementary
Education with a minor in Administrative Supervision. Aubrey
began her forty six years of service with the Palestine ISD after
she served in the Oakwood and Massey Lake school systems. her
dedication to her profession and her superior ability to reach and
teach all children was immeasurable. She taught elementary,
secondary and special needs children at one point in her teaching
career. She believed all children should have an opportunity
to learn and that each of the had something to offer the world.
Aubrey received many awards including the Negro Business and
Professional Women's Club's Sojourner Truth Award 1991, the Wal-Mart
Teacher of the Year Award 2000, the NAACP Educator Award 2007, and
recognition from the AM Story Class Reunion for continuing to serve
the students of Palestine as an outstanding education 2008.
She was currently serving on the Board of Directors for the
Multi-Cultural Center. In May 2007 she decided to join the ranks
of the retired. She also became a member of the elite group as
one with the longest years of service to the Palestine ISD>
The lives of many children, parents and co-workers have been
influenced by her gently but firm hand of guidance. Aubrey was
united in holy matrimony to Jimmy D. Mauldin on May 27, 1961
They were blessed with a precious son, Marcus Marren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, L.C. and Lillie Belle Austin and
her husband of forty one years, Jimmy Dale Mauldin. She leaves to
cherish her many memories her loving son, Marcus, his special
friend, Tonya; a devoted brother, Kenneth Austin and his daughter,
Veronica; brother, Jamal Muhammad; three sisters, Edna Lee
Hawthorne, Wilna Jean Campos and Versie Marie Jesse and her children
Don Jesse, Lonnie Jesse and Mary Ann Randolph; three cousins,
Johnnie Christine Wady, Nell Hemphill and Linda Walker, her close
friend, Shirley Jamerson and a host of extended family and friends.
