Johnnie M, Marshall was born in Palestine,
Texas on January 8, 1909 to the parentage of Garfield and Carrie
Campbell Marshall. She was the first of three children, one of
which (Alberta Marshall Burleson) preceded her in death. She
received her early education in Dallas Texas graduating from Booker
T. Washington High School. Johnnie attended the University of
Chicago, graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She
maintained her certification by attending various colleges in the
Chicago area, she was employed by the University of Chicago until
her retirement. At an early age Johnnie was baptized at Mt. Rose
Baptist Church and later united with Mt. Olive Baptist Church,
Chicago, IL. She served on the Usher Board and assisted in
many capacities when called upon. Upon returning to Dallas in
1995 she united with Homeland Street Missionary Baptist Church where
Dr. T.R. McNealy, Sr. was the pastor. Following the death of
her sister, she returned to the place of her birth and united with
Antioch Baptist Church under the watch-care of Rev. Roy G. Duncan
where she worked with the missionary society and other activities
until her health failed, As a child, Johnnie learned a special
skill from her father, that of pressing clothes. Her creases
were lasting. She pressed her last crease this past September
for her niece. Johnnie, and Aunt Johnnie as she was known and
called by her family and friends, met no strangers. She loved
her family and helped her sister, aunt, and friend. Johnnie
Marshall departed this life on Monday, March 20, 2006, leaving to
mourn and rejoice her homegoing a beloved sister, Frankie Marshall
Hollingsworth; her nephews, Robert Lee Arnold, Palestine, Walter and
Vernon Burleson, Dallas, Derrick and Jimmie Perry, Ennis; nieces,
Dr. Darlene Ruffin-Alexander (James) Fairburn, GA, Liz Perry, Ennis,
Francis Hill, Houston; great nieces, Harolyn Temeng (Kawaku),
Wilmington, DE, Sharmaine Scott (Johnnie), Riverdale, GA, Nichol
Hill, Houston; great nephews, Cedric O. Ingram (Diann), Dallas,
Ramsis G. Burleson, Houston, Jamal, Melvin and Dominique, Houston,
great-grand nieces, Erica, Brittani, Imani and Littie and Nero and
other relatives.
