W.L. Manning, Jr. was the fourth of seven
children born to the union of W.L. Manning, Sr. and Annie Jones.
He was born in Palestine, Anderson, Texas on November 25 1917.
His parents, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
W.L. Manning, Jr. united with St. Paul United Methodist Church at an
early age. He attended school in the Palestine Independent School
District graduating from Lincoln High School. He earned a
baccalaureate degree from Wiley College, Marshall, Texas; a masters
degree from Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. His
post graduate work was done at Prairie View A&M University, at
Southern Methodist University and at East Texas State University.
Mr. Manning dedicated his life to the education of children in the
Palestine comunity. He began his teaching career in 1939 at
Carthage, Texas. His teaching career was interrupted when he
was called in to serve his country in the United States Army in
World War II, where he served for three an done half years. He
then resumed his teaching career in Palestine and here his teaching
spans forty-three years. Mr. Manning was principal of
Washington, Lincoln, Reagan and Southside Schools. He married
Miss Ernestine Powell of Longview, Texas in 1944 and no children
were born to this union. Mr. Manning was active in civic and
fraternal organizations. He served as president of the
Anderson County civic League; Chairman of Old Thunderbird Dist. of
Boy Scouts of America where he received the Silver Beaver Award; and
also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trinity Valley
Teachers Credit Union. His fraternal life included membership in
Dean Lodge #90 F&M.W.R. Roberts Consistory #279; American Woodmen
#66 and Kapa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He departed this life on
August 2, 1991 at Anderson County Memorial Hospital. He is
survived by his wife; two sisters, Mrs. Verna Sanders of South Bend,
Indiana and Mrs. Goldie Fitzpatrick of Greenville, Texas; two
brothers-in-law, Mr. Maurice Lyons of Corpus Christi, Texas and Mr.
Dewey Fitzpatrick of Greenville, Texas; an aunt, Mrs. Eva Dorham of
Fairfield, Texas; an aunt-in-law, Mrs. Mary Jones of Odessa, Texas;
ten nephews; nine nieces and a host of relatives and friends.
Two god-children, Mrs. Porti Dean Deckard and Mrs. Johnny L. Dean;
an adopted brother, Mr. Johnnie Dean and wife.
