Washington Columbus Lee

W. C. Lee was the son of the late Jesse and Daisy Jackson Lee of Palestine, Texas.  He was born August 18, 1902 in Houston County.

He was reared in The Christian Church where he remained active until failing health confined him.

In 1936 he married Miss Clothilde Govan and to this union two children were born, a son, Mr. Don Lee and Daisy Lee Jamerson.


His early education was completed in the Palestine Public School system, receiving his high school diploma from Lincoln High School.  Later he studied at Wilberforce University, at Wilberforce, Ohio.  Mr. Lee earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Wiley College, Marshall, Texas, and later received the Master of Science degree from Texas Southern University at Houston, Texas:  His past graduate work was done at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama.  For more than thirty three years he pursued a career as an educator serving as a classroom teacher and elementary principal.


He was elected as the first Negro to serve as member on the Palestine City Council.  Mr. Lee's fraternal affiliations include, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.  Prince Hall Mason F&AM, Dean Lodge #90 where he served as worshipful master and also as secretary until his death.  He was also a 33 degree mason.


He departed this life May 31, 1994 in Memorial Hospital, Palestine, Texas.


Mr. Lee leaves to cherish his memory:  his wife, Mrs. Clothilde Govan Lee of Palestine; son, Mr. Don Lee of Memphis, Tennessee; a daughter, Mrs. Daisy Jamerson of Los Angeles, California; a granddaughter, Eshuhan Jamerson of Los Angeles, California; three grandsons, Dr. Terrance Reese of Hawkins, Texas, Christopher Lee of Memphis, Tennessee, and Clifford Jamerson of Los Angeles, California; a great grandson, Jonathan Lee of Memphis, Tennessee; a daughter-in-law Mrs. Flora Lee of Memphis, Tennessee; Leatrice Haskin of Texarkana, Arkansas; and Gladys Michael of Ben Wheeler, Texas; grand nieces, one grand nephew, one great grand niece, two great grandnephews; two brothers-in-law, Mr., Dee Dao of Minat, North Dakota and Mr. O.T. Govan of Chicago, Illinois.

Services for W.C. Lee, 91, a longtime educator in Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Fellowship Christian Church with the Rev. Vernon Jackson officiating.  Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.

Mr. Lee died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital.


He was born in Houston County on Aug. 18, 1902, to Jessie and Daisy Jackson Lee.  He was a teacher and elementary principal for more than 33 years.  He was the first Negro to serve as a member of the Palestine City Council.


Mr. Lee graduated from Lincoln High School and studied at Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio,.  He earned a bachelor of science degree from Teas Southern University in Houston.  He did post-graduate work at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala.


He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and Prince Hall Mason F&AM Dean Lodge No 90, where he served as worshipful master and secretary until his death.  He was also a 33nd degree Mason.


He was a member of the Christian Church


He married the former Clothilde Govan in 1936.


Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Clothilde Lee of Palestine; son Don Lee of Memphis, Tenn.;  daughter Daisy Lee Jamerson of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.


The body will be at the church for viewing an hour before the service, and then the casket will be closed.


Prince Hall Mason F&AM Dean Lodge No. 90 will conduct the graveside service.
