R.L. Lane was born on May 28, 1917 in
Anderson County to the parentage of Henry Lane and Luella Robinson
Lane. He was 1 of 9 children who grew up in the Ebenezer,
Tucker, and Long Lake communities. His early schooling was at
Green Bay School in Tucker. After his father died, the family
moved to Palestine, and he attended Lincoln High School.
In July 1940, R. L. Lane enlisted in the
United States Army and was honorably discharged in August 1945.
He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Lane was a
longtime member of the South Union Missionary Baptist Church where
he served faithfully and dutifully wherever needed. He was on
the trustee Board, the Usher Board and was a Deacon. For
several years, he worked in the capacity of church custodian.
Mr. Lane went to his heavenly reward
Monday, November 12, 2001, following a brief illness. One
sister preceded him in death, Mrs. Delilah Hedwood; as well as 4
brothers; E. L. Lane, S. L. Lane, Leroy Lane, and John L. Lane.
Survivors include daughters Ocie B. E. Lane, Janet Lane of Irving,
Shelisa Hicks of Flint; stepdaughter, Patricia Ann Benton of Las
Vegas, Nevada; sons, Rodney Lane of Lufkin, Gerald Wayne Lane of
Texarkana, and R. L. Lane, Jr. of Houston; sisters, Nancy Bell of
Long Beach, Calif., Margie Nell Taylor of Corpus Christi and Alviada
L. Johnson of Palestine; grandchildren, David Simmons of Palestine,
Dega Lane, Christopher Lane and Adrian Lane, all of Flint, Patrice
Benton, Cedric Benton, Andre Benton and Curtis Lane, all of Long
Beach Calif., Ruth Lane and Rashid Lane both of Texarkana, Yana,
Rona, Lori, Kevin, Nicole, Mary Elizabeth, and Tracy Lane, all of
Houston; 13 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends to
mourn his passing.
