Dr. S. A. GOODMAN FAMILY OF SMITH COUNTY

DR. SAMUEL ADAMS GOODMAN & PAMELIA CORRY JEFFERIES

Dr. Samuel Adams GOODMAN, the son of Claiborne GOODMAN and Sara Banton, was born in October 1805 in TN. He lived in the neighborhood of President Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston and cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson. He went to South Carolina to study medicine and it is there that he met his wife.

He married Pamelia Corry JEFFERIES, daughter of Nathaniel JEFFERIES II and Rebecca CORRY, on 11 February 1830 at Union County, SC. Pamela was born 11 February 1811.

Children of Dr. Samuel Adams Goodman and Pamelia Corry Jefferies were as follows:

  1. JAMES B., born 7 September 1831; died within 2 months. He had a twin who died at birth.
  2. DR WILLIAM JEFFERIES, born 9 December 1833; married Mary Priscilla GASTON.
  3. SAMUEL ADAMS JR, born 3 February 1836; died 19 Aug 1899; buried Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; married Kate VINSON.
  4. SARA REBECCA PAMELA; born 18 July 1838; died 17 December 1852 at Limestone Spring, SC; buried Old Jefferies Cemetery by the Brick House.

Dr. Sam practiced medicine in Union District near Chester for 25 to 30 years. In 1850 he moved his family to Holly Springs, Marshall County, MS, but after the children started to college he moved his family back to SC. The family moved to Smith Co, Texas in 1857. Dr. Sam retired from medicine when they moved to Smith County. They bought a farm near Old Jamestown, in eastern Smith County, where Dr. Sam engaged in farming and other business ventures.

Pamelia died 21 September 1878. Dr. Sam died on 23 April 1902 at age 96. They are both buried in Oakwood Cemtery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.

DR. WILLIAM JEFFERIES GOODMAN & MARY PRICILLA GASTON

Dr. William Jefferies GOODMAN, the son of Dr. Samuel Adams GOODMAN and Pamelia Corry JEFFERIES, was born on 9 December 1833.

He married Mary Priscilla GASTON, daughter of Col. Robert Kirkpatrick GASTON and Letitia SUDDATH, on 13 February1867 at Smith Co, Texas. She was born 13 January 1847

Children of Dr William Jefferies Goodman and Mary Priscilla Gaston were as follows:

  1. BERTA; born 14 August 1868; died 19 March 1870 at age 1; buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.
  2. SALLIE GERTRUDE, born 19 May 1871, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; died 12 October 1939, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; buried Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith County; TX married 25 October 1893, Smith Co, Texas, James Hutchison LeGRAND, son of Thomas S. LeGRAND and Ann HUTCHESON. He was born 11 October 1867, Appomatox, VA; died 18 April 1935, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; buried Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.
  3. WILLIAM GASTON; born 21 January 1875; died 23 October 1937; married Lucille PATE 19 May 1926 at Dallas, Texas;
  4. ETTA GWENDOLEN; born 21 January 1878; died 11 June 1915; buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.

Priscilla died 1 January 1915. Dr. William died on 26 August 1921 at age 87. They are both buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas

SAMUEL ADAMS GOODMAN, JR & KATE VINSON

Samuel Adams GOODMAN, Jr., the son of Dr. Samuel Adams GOODMAN and Pamelia Corry JEFFERIES, was born on 3 February 1836. He married Kate VINSON.

Children of Samuel Adams Goodman, Jr and Kate Vinson were as follows:

  1. MATTIE MAY; born 9 December 1864; died 28 November 1883 at age 18; buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.
  2. SAMUEL VINSON; born 20 October 1868; died 4 February 1936 at age 67.
  3. JOHN J; born 16 September 1870; died 7 June 1899 at age 28.
  4. WILLIAM J; born 24 October 1874; died 5 Apr 1916 at age 41.
  5. PAMELIA; born 8 September 1876; died 3 Jun 1938: married J. B. GIRARD
  6. SARAH JULIA (Sallie); born 16 December 1878; died 10 January 1960 at age 81; buried Oakwood Cemetery; married Dr. A. N. CALLOWAY, 1 September 1913, Smith Co, Texas.

He died on 19 August 1899 at age 63 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.
